Nvidia RTX 4090 laptops – complete list & best RTX 4090 options
By Andrei Girbea, last updated on April 30, 2024

Time to discuss the Nvidia RTX 4090 Laptop mobile graphics chip, the most powerful mobile dGPU option available so far in 2024 for high-performance gaming and work notebooks.

The GeForce RTX 4090 is built on Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture, with updated CUDA processing cores, improved Ray-Tracing capabilities, and DLSS 3, among multiple other novelties. Advanced Optimus and improved efficiency on battery use will also make a difference when running demanding loads on the go. A Studio variant of the GeForce RTX 4090 is also available, as the Nvidia RTX 5000 Ada.

Of course, the devil’s always in the details, so you’ll need to go through thorough reviews before deciding on getting one of these RTX 4090 laptops (or in fact any of the new RTX 4000 configurations). Especially when considering the premium you’ll have to pay for a top-specced model, with 4090 notebooks expected to sell in the 3500 – 5000 USD/EUR range at launch.

Of course, you shouldn’t expect good value for your money with an RTX 4090 laptop. Instead, with these, you’re paying a premium and expecting the best performance available on a mobile computer. It’s as simple as that.

We will have comparisons with the RTX 4080 and 4070 mobile options on the site, as well as with the previous RTX 3080Ti/3080 Laptop chips, to help you better understand the performance differences between them and make the right buying decisions for your needs and budget. I’m just waiting to test a few more of these new-gen RTX laptops first, to be able to draw better-informed conclusions for you.

The RTX 4090 (link to Nvidia’s official website) is the most advanced mobile dGPU ever made, with the highest number of CUDA, RT, and Tensor cores, as well as the latest generation updates of all these processing units. This makes the RTX 4090 the prime GPU option for 4K gaming on a modern notebook, especially for the most demanding AAA games.

At the same time, the 4090 is still available in a multitude of variants, with power packages between 80 to 150W and support for up to +25W extra with Dynamic Boost 2.0. The lower-power MaxQ variants are meant for ultraportable designs, while full-size laptops will get the full-power 150W variant, and the overall performance will vary between each implementation.

The Cores clocks vary alongside the power settings as well (up to 1455 MHz at 80W, up to 2040MHz at 150W), but all the other features remain identical between them.

As far as performance goes, the 150W RTX 4090 Laptop chip should be capable of a 25+% boost in rasterization capabilities compared to a 150W 3080Ti Laptop, while the gains in RTX and DLSS performance should be notably more significant.

Furthermore, the transition to the Ada Lovelace architecture built on the improved TSMC 4nm node will translate into improved efficiency as well. That’s important if you plant to use your laptop on batter mode, on the go, and not always keep it plugged in on your desk.

In comparison, the RTX 4080 should perform closer to the previous-gen RTX 3080Ti, although the Ampere chip will maintain an advantage in certain situations due to the extra amount of memory and ROP units. At the same time, RTX 4080 laptops should be more affordable than 3080Ti notebooks at discount, while the latest 4090 will match the pricing of those 3080Ti models when new.

The benchmarks showcase a massive increase in performance for the RTX 4090 chip vs. the previous RTX 3080Ti top-tier mobile dGPU, both at the same 175W TGP, the maximum possible in mobile implementations for these platforms. We’re looking at 40-60% improved scores in most tests for the 4090 laptops, and even higher when it comes to specialized functionality such as Ray Tracing.

The RTX 4080 175W is not as fast as the 4090, which was to be expected given the lower number of cores and everything. However, it is still 20-40% faster than the previous best-performing 3080Ti laptops, though.

And here are some gaming results on these platforms.

The advantage noted in benchmarks translates into the gaming experience as well, with the 4090 laptops at about 40-60% higher framerates in regular rasterization titles, and up to 75% higher with RT on than the best 3080Ti mobile implementations.

Furthermore, DLSS3 is a notable update of the Ada Lovelace platforms, allowing for frame generation and smoother performance, with only some lag and rare graphical artifacts. DLSS is especially useful when running games at high resolutions, as explained in this article that covers 4K gaming on a 4090 notebook.

Looks for more details in our reviews (linked further down in the next sections), once we get to test more of these RTX 4090 and 4080 mobile implementations over the next months.

Best RTX 4090 laptops in 2024 (portable, gaming, workstations)

If you’re after a powerful portable and compact laptop with a 4090 inside, the 2023 update of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is your single and best option right now.

This is unmatched in its class and implements an advanced vapor chamber cooling module, but it is nonetheless constrained by its size and won’t match the performance capabilities of the larger options, as shown earlier in the Benchmarks section.

asus rog zephyrus g14 2023 general

The ROG Zephyrus M16 is an interesting middle-grounder, a 16-inch laptop more compact and lightweight than the other full-size options, and that makes it a solid all-purpose laptop. This does get a tri-fan thermal module with oversized radiators, but it’s still only a mid-powered implementation of the Intel Core i9 HX platform and the RTX 4090 Laptop dGPU.

With those out of the way, if you’re OK with a larger and heavier computer, there are a lot of excellent full-size options running Mobile RTX 4090s at their full capacity (150W TGP + up to 25W with Dynamic Boost).

I’m still waiting to review them all before drawing conclusions, but I incline toward recommending the ROG Scar models with either Intel or AMD platforms, the updated MSI Raider and Titan notebooks, and the completely revamped Razer Blades as contenders for the “Best in Class” prize. The Blades in particular have that pristine build quality and non-gaming design on their side, which none of the other options can match.

These are all expensive, though, so if you’re looking for a 4090 Laptop that’s a tad more affordable than most, the Omen 17X from HP and those barebone designs from XMG or Eluktronics should be on your list. Especially the NEOs with the 16:10 displays and liquid-metal cooling accessories. Just don’t expect the same build quality and features with these barebone chassis as with some of the other A-tier brands.

Wrap-up

Well, that’s about it for our coverage of top-tier performance laptops specced with Nvidia RTX 4090 Laptop graphics.

I’m keeping this up-to-date with new info and products as they become available.

In the meantime, I’m looking for your thoughts and feedback on these RTX 4090 devices down below, in the comments section. And let me know if you spot any other option that we’ve missed and should be included in the article, but is not.

Rog Strix Scar 17 (model G733PY sporting R9 7945HX, RTX4090, 32GB ddr5, 1TB ssd) is available in Ro stores starting from €3750 since beginning of March already

Yet i've seen not a single review of it. Literally no one is reviewing this model.
    What's going on?

I'll have a review up in a week or so. Working on it right now

        That's just great!

The last year's Scar 17 SE that used the same vapor chamber solution and the same max TDP (175W+65W in manual mode) didn't manage to get your full attention and i really missed your attention to details regarding thermals / noise combo or the gaming performance tests (your common array of tests between laptops of different generations helped me doing comparisons and was quite definitive for me picking a 733QS for myself in 2021 and a 513RW for my daughter in 2022)

Now i'm looking forward to next-gens and can't really decide between the latest RTX4090 Asus laptops – Scar 18 (G834JY) or Scar 17 (G733PY).

So, i really hope the G733PY will get your full attention and get a full / in depth review :)

Also, if it's possible to do some gaming tests with SMT Off – as in a pure 16C/16T config?
It will definitely reduce performance in Cinebench or Productivity tools benchmarks, but it may help in gaming – for which 16Threads should be more than enough – to provide enough thermal headroom to allow higher and longer boost duration.

        Thank you.

Thermals are already very good on the G733PY.

Any idea how to disable SMT on mobile, so I can check that as well?

SMT should be a bios setting (For Intel CPU it should be called Hyperthreading, but AMD calls it SMT)

There is no option to disable SMT in the BIOS, or any other options that allow any control over the CPU

Such a pity AMD is locking down everything CPU related… IIRC the Strix Scar 18 bios even allows undervolting

Hi Andrei, I'm not sure if you would count these, but the workstations have the professional version of the RTX 4090, the Ada A5000 mobile.

    techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/rtx-5000-mobile-ada-generation.c4097

These include the Lenovo P16 Gen 2, the HP Zbook 16 Fury G10, the Dell Precision 7680 (and Precision 7780), and similar workstation laptops.

The big difference is that they are of course, professional workstations and not really used for gaming. They tend to be clocked lower for longevity, have ISV certifications, and are generally built for a 5 year service life.

One unique feature of these laptops is that they have an OLED option, which notably none of the gaming 4090 laptops have this generation.

Thank you, this is a good addition to the article. I'll add a paragraph about these options.

Here's a bit more data and sorry about the link spam.

Minor typo – the professional version is "Ara 5000" without the "A".

        psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P16_Gen_2/ThinkPad_P16_Gen_2_Spec.pdf

One flaw with this laptop is the 230W charger is not adequate and it tends to drain the battery at full load when plugged in.

I believe that Lenovo has since update the BIOS – it lowers the performance, but won't drain the battery (not sure though).

Seems to be the same screen as the Lenovo Z16 4k OLED that you reviewed.

Some data about the Dell laptops this generation.

The last generation of Dell had a flaw though – tended to overvolt.

Here is a review of the Gen 9, which also has a 230W charger, but is more conservatively clocked.

Note that all of these 4k 60Hz laptops seem to have the touchscreen and the graininess issues.

The only other notable entry in this category is the MSI CreatorPro X17 HX A13V, which seems to be based on the GT77 Titan.

        msi.com/Content-Creation/CreatorPro-X17-HX-A13VX

Has the same build quality as the GT77, which some people complain about, but the cooling is solid – actually are you planning to do the GT77 still as a review?

I have the test resutls for the Titan GT77 but never got to writting the article, due to time constraints. Not sure it's worth doing it anymore. I only had limited time with it anyway, a handful of days, so not really enough for a proper indepth review
